The transfer of the cross-section data records of the "Tübinger Familien, TÜF" (Tübingen Family Study) into a longitudinal study for the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its vascular complications.
Prevention of type 2 diabetes and its vascular complications
Over the years the number of cases of age-related diabetes (type 2 diabetes mellitus) has increased dramatically. In Germany approximately 6 per cent of adults are affected, i.e. more than 4 million persons. This increase in the number of persons affected by this disorder is clearly related to our modern lifestyle: More sedentary professions and less physical activity, coupled with easy access to too many calorific foods. Complications resulting from diabetes are vascular damage which start early and progress insidiously.
Major study programme in Tübingen
For the last 6 years the University of Tübingen has been collecting data on the risk profiles of persons more likely to be affected by this disorder. These people will be invited to participate in a prevention programme which will run for a number of years. Participation in this programme is free of charge.
One third of the German population can meanwhile be considered a high-risk group in respect of type 2 diabetes. The objective of this study programme is to develop long term predictors to identify who is likely to contract diabetes despite changes in their lifestyle. In addition it aims to determine which type of person will benefit from which measure (sport, diet, medication).
